Daichi Shimbo, MD, is a physician-scientist at the Columbia University Medical Center. He received a B.S. from the Johns Hopkins University in Biomedical Engineering and a M.D. from the Albany Medical College. After completing an Internal Medicine residency, Dr. Shimbo went on to complete Chief Medical residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Cardiovascular Medicine at the Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, before joining the faculty at Columbia University in 2003. Dr. Daichi Shimbo currently holds senior roles in patient care, research, education and administration. Dr. Shimbo is the Director of the interdisciplinary Columbia Hypertension Center and Hypertension Laboratory, and conducts research into the behavioral and biological mechanisms that underlie hypertension and cardiovascular disease. He is an expert in the diagnosis and treatment of hypertension, and how hypertension and its phenotypes are related to cardiovascular disease onset. As the Director of Cardiovascular Physiology Research and a non-invasive cardiologist, he conducts research into the relations of hypertension with cardiac structure and ventricular function. Dr. Shimbo’s research has been continuously funded by the NIH/NHLBI since 2003. Since 2003, Dr. Shimbo has mentored approximately 40 early career investigators including students, residents/fellows, and junior faculty members, many of whom are pursuing an academic career in clinical and translational research. Dr. Shimbo has won several teaching awards, and currently oversees the training/educations programs in the Irving Institute for Clinical and Translational Research/Clinical and Translational Science Award at Columbia. These include the KL2 program, TL1 program, the Masters of Science in Patient Oriented Research (MS/POR), and Columbia Summer Research Institute. He is past Senator representing Tenured Faculty, and was recently appointed to be an Associate Dean for Research Career Development at Columbia University Medical Center. Dr. Shimbo holds leadership positions in several national scientific and scholarly organizations.
