Philip A. Cole, MD, PhD
Cole's research career has focused on the application of chemical methods to address biomedical problems. His group's scientific achievements include the development of a simple and widely used method to carry out protein semi-synthesis. In addition, his group elucidated the catalytic mechanism of protein kinase reactions, and has used this model to design protein kinase inhibitors, providing insights into the insulin receptor, Cdk, Abl, and EGFR. Cole's lab also developed the first selective melatonin rhythm enzyme, histone acetyltransferase, and histone demethylase enzyme inhibitors. Recently, his group has shown it is possible to chemically rescue a mutant enzyme in living cells.
