My research group focuses on understanding and developing novel therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative diseases, including amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and dementias related to the protein tau. We have developed antisense oligonucleotide mRNA inhibitors for superoxide dismutase 1, miRNAs, and tau and have demonstrated that this approach improves pathology and behavior in animal models. Antisense oligonucleotides targeting SOD1 have been evaluated in early phase clinical trial in participants with SOD1-related amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
