Dr. Armenian is the Barron Hilton Chair and Professor of Pediatrics in the Department of Pediatrics and the Director of the Division of Outcomes Research in the Department of Population Sciences at the City of Hope (COH) Cancer Center. He co-leads the COH Cancer Control and Population Sciences Program and directs the Center for Survivorship and Outcomes in the Hematologic Malignancies Research Institute, which provides the research platform to longitudinally follow one of the largest cohorts (>14,000 survivors) of hematopoietic cell transplantation survivors in the world. As the Chair of the Children’s Oncology Group Survivorship and Outcomes Committee (2010-2016), he oversaw the planning, implementation, and conduct of survivorship studies across >200 participating institutions. He has also led several national and international efforts to identify research priorities and evidence-based guidelines for late effects screening in childhood and adult-onset cancer survivors.
Dr. Armenian’s own research broadly encompasses the following domains: 1) Describe the long-term burden of chronic health conditions in cancer survivors; 2) Elucidate the pathogenesis treatment-associated complications in cancer patients and survivors; 3) Develop effective screening and prevention in these patients. He conducted seminal studies characterizing the epidemiology of cancer treatment-related cardiovascular disease (t-CVD), identifying important associations between certain therapeutic exposures and modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. He has translated these findings into evidence-based screening guidelines for t-CVD, and demonstrated the cost-effectiveness of these guidelines, establishing standards of follow-up care for cancer patients. Finally, he has characterized the pathophysiology of t-CVD and led multi-center risk reduction clinical trials for high-risk childhood and adult-onset cancer survivor populations. Dr. Armenian is an LLS Scholar in Clinical Research and the recipient of the annual Frank A. Oski Memorial Lectureship from the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, in recognition of outstanding clinical or laboratory investigations in pediatric hematology/oncology.
