Dr. Mallipattu is the DCI–Martin R. Liebowitz Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Nephrology & Hypertension at the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. He earned a B.S. from the University of California, San Diego in Biomedical Engineering, an M.D. from Boston University, and completed Internal Medicine residency and Nephrology fellowship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He was elected to the ASCI in 2023.

His laboratory investigates Krüppel-like transcription factors (KLFs) as master regulators of kidney cell identity, metabolism, and stress responses across various kidney diseases. Specifically, his group identified KLF15 as a driver of podocyte differentiation, steroid responsiveness, and fatty acid metabolism in the kidney. In addition, his laboratory identified KLF6 as a key regulator of podocyte mitochondrial function, specifically complex assembly. Recent studies also demonstrate that podocyte KLF6 attenuates podocyte loss, improves proximal tubule function, and limits fibrosis in diabetic models through cell-cell signaling. Ongoing projects span diabetic kidney disease, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, and the transition from acute kidney injury to fibrosis, with parallel efforts in utilizing high-throughput small-molecule screening to identify small molecules targeting KLF signaling. His program is supported by extramural funding from NIH/NIDDK, the Department of Veterans Affairs, and has been recognized by the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 2019.

He actively mentors physician–scientists across training levels and has been recognized with multiple mentorship awards. He has served on national (NIH and VA) and international grant study sections as well as the regional and national strategic research initiatives, such as the NIDDK Institute-Wide Strategic Planning Group.
