Dr. Edelman is a Professor of Medicine at Yale. Certified as an internist, HIV specialist, and in Addiction Medicine, she serves as the physician consultant at the Yale New Haven Hospital Nathan Smith HIV Clinic and routinely treats substance use disorders as well as provides HIV and routine medical care among patients with HIV. She is Director of the Yale Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS Clinical and Health Services Research Core; co-Director of Education at the Yale Center for Clinical Investigation and co-PI of Yale’s TL1 and KL2 awards; co-Chair of the Veterans Aging Cohort Study (VACS) Opioids Core; and Associate Director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded Research in Addiction Medicine Scholars (RAMS) Program. Her clinical and research focus is on understanding and addressing harms of substance use among individuals with and at substantial risk for HIV using observational, intervention, and implementation-science based methods with clinical and community-based partners. She has led work to characterize patterns and the associated impact of prescribed opioids among individuals with HIV; this line of work, initiated before there was broad attention to the opioid overdose epidemic, sought to contribute to the evidence-base regarding risks and benefits of opioids to guide clinical practice. Dr. Edelman has additionally led work to promote integrated treatment of addiction in HIV clinics and elsewhere. This has included clinical trials to evaluate: a) the impact of novel medications to address substance use; b) the effectiveness of new models of care (e.g., with stepped care models), and c) the implementation of strategies on promoting evidence-based practices to address substance use. Dr. Edelman has also contributed to enhancing HIV prevention, particularly among individuals with substance use, through efforts to promote HIV testing, partner notification, and HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP). She routinely mentors medical students, public health students, residents, post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty.
