Dr. John Kisiel is a Professor of Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, where he practices in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology with a clinical focus on gastrointestinal neoplastic disorders and inflammatory bowel disease. He received his B.A. in Biology from University of Chicago, an M.D. from University of Illinois College of Medicine at Rockford, and he completed post-graduate medical education in internal medicine and gastroenterology at Mayo Clinic.
The primary research focus of Dr. Kisiel’s Molecular Cancer Diagnostics Laboratory is the discovery and translation of biomarkers for the early detection and surveillance of cancer. His research program has internationally recognized expertise in next-generation DNA sequencing, bioinformatics, commercial test development, and clinical trial execution. This work is funded by the National Cancer Institute, generous philanthropic benefactors, and industry (Exact Sciences (Madison WI)). Cancer biomarkers markers discovered in the Kisiel lab are key components of FDA-breakthrough designation and FDA-approved devices.
Dr. Kisiel has mentored numerous clinical and research trainees, post-doctoral fellows and faculty. He currently serves as the Mayo Clinic GIH Associate Division Chair for Research, has active disease group leadership roles for the Mayo Clinic Comprehensive Cancer Center, and is a charter member of the Molecular Cancer Diagnosis and Classification study section of the National Cancer Institute.
