Dr. Jonathan Newman is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Research at the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. As a cardiovascular physician-scientist, his research bridges population-based prevention and precision medicine, with a focus on risk stratification and the mitigation of cardiometabolic disease through innovative approaches.
Dr. Newman investigates how environmental exposures—particularly air pollution—interact with biological pathways to influence cardiovascular risk. He leads two NIH-funded clinical trials: one evaluating whether improving indoor air quality can lower blood pressure, establishing environmental exposures as modifiable cardiovascular risk factors; and another exploring biomarkers and multi-omic approaches to enhance risk prediction and understand resilience to coronary artery disease. These studies reflect his commitment to integrating environmental and molecular data to develop individualized strategies for prevention.
He is the Principal Investigator of AirPressureNYC, the largest randomized trial to assess the impact of indoor air quality improvement on blood pressure among public housing residents. His research is supported by multiple R-level NIH grants and American Heart Association awards. Dr. Newman has authored over 135 peer-reviewed publications and holds an h-index of 34 (Scopus, August 2025). He has held leadership roles in landmark NIH trials including ISCHEMIA, RECOVER, ACTIV4, and TACT2, and chairs a forthcoming American Heart Association scientific statement on Air Pollution, Environmental Exposures, and Hypertension.
Dr. Newman earned his MD and MPH from Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and completed his residency, Chief Residency, and cardiovascular training at Columbia University/New York Presbyterian Hospital.
