Dr. David Leaf received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania, his MD from NYU School of Medicine, and his MMSc in Clinical Investigation from Harvard Medical School. He trained in Internal Medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and in Nephrology at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital Joint Fellowship Program, where he conducted research under the mentorship of Dr. Sushrut Waikar. Following fellowship, he joined the faculty at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, where he is now an Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Leaf’s laboratory conducts patient-oriented research focused on acute kidney injury (AKI) and critical illness. He has utilized interventional, translational, and epidemiologic approaches to address clinically important questions in patients with AKI. Areas of investigation include developing novel diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic strategies for AKI in the settings of cardiac surgery, cancer, infection, and critical illness. His studies have been published in leading journals including NEJM, JAMA, BMJ, Annals of Internal Medicine, JAMA Internal Medicine, Nature Medicine, and JCI. His research has also been featured in national media such as The New York Times, Washington Post, USA Today, CNN, NPR, and Scientific American. Dr. Leaf has authored over 160 peer-reviewed manuscripts and mentored over 25 trainees. He serves as an Associate Editor at the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology. Dr. Leaf’s laboratory has been continuously funded by the NIH since 2013. He has served as PI on four R01/U01 grants, two of which are active. In addition to his research, he remains clinically active, caring for critically ill patients on the Renal ICU consult service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
