My interests lie in molecular virology and the translation of that knowledge into novel antiviral strategies, as well as the development of novel anticancer therapies. I am particularly interested in mechanisms to counter the development of resistance, such as by targeting host cell functions, or highly conserved essential RNA secondary structures via a process we term “programmable antivirals.” I work on a broad range of viruses, including hepatitis viruses, enteroviruses, influenza and coronavirus, and oversee and participate in preclinical and early clinical evaluation of novel antiviral and anticancer therapies, as well as agents countering fatty liver disease, sepsis, and ALS. I am committed to the training of the next generation of translationally-focused biomedical researchers.  As PI of a U19 Antiviral Drug Discovery (AViDD) Center, I have overseen and personally directed projects focused on a broad range of viruses. I am the Director of ViRx@Stanford, the Stanford Biosecurity and Pandemic Preparedness Initiative, and the Director of the Center for Hepatitis and Liver Tissue Engineering. I have also successfully lead productive academic-industry partnerships, and founded/ co-founded four biotechnology companies to advance the development of novel therapeutics (in preclinical through phase III development, two of which have completed successful phase III studies).
