Dr. Bilimoria is a surgical oncologist and a health services, quality improvement, and health policy researcher at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. He is the Vice Chair for Quality in the Department of Surgery and the John B. Murphy Professor of Surgery. At Northwestern Memorial Hospital and the Northwestern Medicine system, Dr. Bilimoria serves as the Vice President for Quality, the Medical Director of Surgical Quality, and is the Chair of the Surgical Oversight and Quality Committee. He leads several quality and process improvement initiatives for the hospital and the healthcare system. His clinical practice is focused on melanoma and sarcoma.
Dr. Bilimoria is the Director of the Surgical Outcomes and Quality Improvement Center of Northwestern University (SOQIC), a center of 35 faculty and staff focused on national, regional, and local quality improvement research and practical initiatives. He has a particular interest in large, pragmatic cluster-randomized trials examining hospital quality initiatives and healthcare policies. He is the Director of the 55-hospital Illinois Surgical Quality Improvement Collaborative (ISQIC) and Principal Investigator of the FIRST Trial, and he is a Faculty Scholar at the American College of Surgeons.
He has published more than 300 scientific articles, with numerous in JAMA and the New England Journal of Medicine in the last few years. Dr. Bilimoria’s research is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the American Cancer Society, the National Comprehensive Cancer Network, the American College of Surgeons, the American Board of Surgery, the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education, and the Health Care Services Corporation. He was recently listed by Becker’s as one of the “Top 50 Experts Leading the Field of Patient Safety” in the U.S
