Dr. Madhur graduated summa cum laude from Duke University with a B.S. in Biomedical Engineering and Biology and completed her MD/PhD training from the University of Virginia, obtaining her PhD in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics. She then returned to Duke University for Internal Medicine training and completed her Cardiology fellowship at Emory University, where she spent 3 years obtaining further basic science postdoctoral training. She joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University in 2012 where she rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor of Medicine with tenure in the Divisions of Clinical Pharmacology and Cardiology. She moved to Indiana University in 2023 to become the Division Chief of Clinical Pharmacology. Dr. Madhur studies immune mechanisms of hypertension and end-organ damage with a focus on adaptive immunity and T cell derived cytokines. Her research has defined roles of specific cytokines including interleukin 17, interleukin 21, and interferon gamma in both renal and vascular dysfunction in hypertension. She has published her work in high impact journals including the Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI), JCI Insight, Cardiovascular Research and Hypertension. She has received numerous career awards including an American Heart Association (AHA) Hypertension Council Harry Goldblatt New Investigator Award, American Physiological Society (APS) Water and Electrolyte Homeostasis Section New Investigator Award, American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI) Young Physician Scientist Award, National Institutes of Health (NIH) New Innovator Award, AHA Established Investigator Award, the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, and an International Society of Hypertension Mid-career Award for women researchers. She currently serves as Associate editor for Clinical Science and Guest Editor for Hypertension. Dr. Madhur also serves in leadership roles within the AHA and American Physiological Society. She has presented, organized, and/or chaired sessions for the AHA and subspecialty conferences, APS meetings, and the American Society of Nephrology Kidney Week meeting. Dr. Madhur has been elected as a fellow of both the AHA (FAHA) and ACC (FACC). She has also served on the ASCI DEI committee.
