Dr. Lorch is a neonatologist and a perinatal epidemiologist/health services researcher whose research focuses on the role of various drivers to explain variations in health outcomes of high-risk mothers and infants, particularly those infants born prematurely. Dr. Lorch is currently the Kristine Sandberg Knisely Professor of Pediatrics, with tenure, at the Perelman School of Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania; Associate Chief, Division of Neonatology; and Director of Clinical and Epidemiological Research within the Division of Neonatology at The Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He completed his undergraduate and medical school at Northwestern University, and received his Masters in Clinical Epidemiology at the Perleman School of Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Lorch's research concentrates on four primary areas using expertise in population health, large clinical and administrative datasets rand prospective cohort studies: (1) Quality of care assessment and variation across hospitals and health care systems; (2) Racial/ethnic and socioeconomic disparities in health and health care, and the role of health insurance on pediatric outcomes; (3) Access to the perinatal health care system, and how health care system organization impacts maternal and infant health; and (4) Care of infants exposed to opioids prenatally. His work has been supported by the NIH, AHRQ, and the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Department of Health and Human Services.
