Dr. Arthur “Art” Beyder is a physician-scientist at the Mayo Clinic, who is renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to understanding the cellular and molecular mechanisms in gut mechanosensation.

Art’s received BS summa cum laude in biophysics and mathematics and MD-PhD from SUNY Buffalo. Art’s thesis with Dr. Frederick Sachs, who discovered mechanosensitive ion channels, examined membrane electromechanics, resulted in seven publications and multiple patents. Further training in Mayo Clinic’s Clinician-Investigator program in internal medicine and gastroenterology, and post-doctoral work with Dr. Gianrico Farrugia, a luminary on ion channels in the gut resulted in 22 publications, including first-author in Gastroenterology and Circulation, and established the field of channelopathies in the gut. He received the Bargen and Balfour awards, recognizing him as a top GI and Mayo clinic fellow, respectively.

Art joined Mayo Clinic staff in 2014, and quickly differentiated his research program toward uncovering the mechanisms of mechanosensitivity in the gut, a tremendous medical problem. His NIH K08 examined the recently discovered Piezo channels in the gut mucosa, and this work led him to establish the concept of “gut touch,” receiving 2019 NIH New Innovator (DP2) and independent R01 funding. As PI, he holds two R01s and DP2 from the NIH as well as internal and foundation funding. He was recognized as New Investigator at the Department of Medicine at Mayo in 2019 and AGA Young Investigator in 2020. Art was promoted to Associate Professor in 2020, became AGA Fellow in 2023. Art has 73 publications (42 as staff) including in top journals such as Cell, PNAS, eLife and Gastroenterology, 39 invitations for talks and as moderator nationally and internationally. Art has mentored 16 students and fellows. He is involved in service, education, and leadership, serving as a councilor at AGA, an assistant director of the Mayo Clinic’s Medical Scientist Training Program and head of the GI motility group at GI in Mayo.
