Dr. Keisuke Ito is a Professor of Cell Biology at the Stem Cell Institute, Medicine, and Oncology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he also serves as the Director of Scientific Resources for the Ruth L. and D. S. Gottesman Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine. Following his postdoctoral training at Keio University and Harvard Medical School, he joined Albert Einstein in 2012 as a faculty member. The central research focus of the Ito Lab is to expand our understanding of the regulatory pathways controlling the equilibrium of healthy and malignant hematopoietic stem cells. At the core of this work is the study of stem cell division, with particular emphasis on how self-renewal and differentiation are coordinated to maintain tissue homeostasis. Dr. Ito is also exploring therapeutic strategies targeting cellular metabolism and mitochondrial function. Additionally, his team investigates the interplay between epigenetics and microRNAs, including the activity of TET enzymes, in the development of myelodysplastic syndrome and other hematologic conditions. Using single-cell technologies, live-cell imaging, and disease models, Dr. Ito’s research aims to deepen our understanding of stem cell biology, the bone marrow microenvironment, and hematopoiesis. These insights are intended to improve transplantation techniques, foster the development of novel treatments, and ultimately lead to cures for various blood disorders. Through this work, Dr. Ito aspires to make meaningful contributions to advancing therapies and enhancing patient outcomes, with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of life for individuals affected by hematologic diseases.
