Ann-Kathrin Eisfeld pursued her Medical training and Residency/Fellowship in the Division of Hematology at the University of Leipzig/Germany until 2010. With increasing interest in translational science, she then joined the laboratories of Clara D. Bloomfield and Albert de la Chapelle at The Ohio State University (OSU) for her postdoctoral Fellowship, to be trained in cancer genetics and prognostication. Driven by the desire to become a true physician scientist, she started the Physician Scientist Training Program/Internal Medicine Residency and Medical Oncology Fellowship at OSU in 2016, from which she graduated in 2020. During her training, her highly productive research shifted towards large-scale sequencing efforts of AML, resulting in 11 first author and 2 senior author publications; including the first molecular oncoprint of AML. She then joined faculty in 2020, focusing on sequencing efforts on rare molecular subtypes and understudied patient populations. At the time of her faculty appointment, her long-term mentor Dr. Bloomfield unexpectedly passed away. To preserve Dr. Bloomfield’s legacy, including her unique patient and data set based on AML patients treated on frontline protocols of CALGB/Alliance, OSU founded the Clara D. Bloomfield Center for Leukemia Outcomes Research, for which Dr. Eisfeld was initially named Center co-director, and then assumed the Director position in early 2021. The Bloomfield Center significantly expanded in scope and size, including the creation of an OSU patient database, the Bloomfield Center-led MARROW consortium consistent of 13 major US Cancer Centers with a joined Redcap database and statistical support, and numerous national and international collaborations. It currently supports >30 research projects across the globe and resulted thus far in >30 high impact publications, including Nature, Nature Genetics, Cancer Discovery, Nature Cancer, and Cell Stem Cell. A focus is on the understanding of understudied survival prognosticators, including genetic ancestry, lived experience, sex, and rare leukemic presentations.
