Dr. Fawzi is a graduate of Cairo University School of Medicine, where she also obtained her first ophthalmology residency. She then went on to do a research fellowship, followed by a second ophthalmology residency at the Jules Stein Eye Institute of the University of California, Los Angeles. She then obtained a vitreoretinal surgical fellowship at Doheny Eye Institute of the University of Southern California, Keck School of Medicine, whereupon she was recruited to join the retina faculty following her training. She was recruited to the Feinberg school of Medicine of Northwestern University in 2012, where she currently holds the Cyrus Tang and Lee Jampol endowed Professorship and divides her time between her clinical/surgical practice and her NIH-funded research in Chicago. 

She has authored/coauthored over 200 peer-reviewed articles, has delivered six Named Lectureships and has been elected as a member of the Retina, Macula and American Ophthalmological Societies, the most prestigious in Ophthalmology. She has received the Honor Award of the American Society of Retina Specialists, the Young Investigator Award of the Macula Society, the Secretariat and the Achievement Awards of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and is a Gold Fellow of the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology. She has been consistently funded by the NIH since 2011 and currently serves as a standing member of the NEI PED1 study section. 

She is a founding member and the President Elect of the International Ocular Circulation Society. She serves on many committees for the various ophthalmological societies and coordinates various programs within these societies. She is a frequent invited speaker internationally and has also been a frequent visiting professor at academic ophthalmological institutions in the USA and beyond. She is a well-recognized authority on retinal imaging, and has received many accolades and awards for this research.
