Dr. Shawn Hervey-Jumper holds the Mitchel Berger, MD Endowed Professorship in Neurosurgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He earned a B.S. in Biology from Oakwood University and an M.D. from Ohio State University. He completed neurosurgery residencies and neuro-oncology postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Michigan and UCSF. He is Vice Chair for Education, Residency Program Director, and an NIH-funded investigator specializing in the surgical management of brain cancers within functional brain regions, utilizing intraoperative physiological mapping. His research investigates tumor driven neuronal circuit remodeling, focusing on molecular mechanisms of activity-dependent tumor proliferation and effects of tumor therapies on neuronal circuit remodeling and neuronal computations. His lab demonstrated that glioma infiltrated cortex exhibits abnormal task-evoked neural responses, with malignant glioma stem-like cells enriched in circuits that display heightened synaptogenic and neurotrophic activities, secreting modulatory factors that mediate tumor-neuron interactions. He has led clinical trials as principal investigator, identifying molecular and clinical predictors for trial enrollment. He teaches neuroscience, cancer biology, and research ethics. He serves on the editorial board of Science Translational Medicine, Neuro-Oncology, and JAMA Oncology. In addition to his academic responsibilities, Dr. Hervey-Jumper actively contributes to professional societies, serving as President-Elect of the Society for Neuro-Oncology. He promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, advances clinical and translational research initiatives, and enhances educational programs to improve patient outcomes and foster international scientific exchange.
